of imports in 2025, up 18.5% in a year and close to 78% of all the country trades, per the statistics agency

Tajikistan: imports are 78% of trade, but brands enter through the neighbours

You built an entry plan for Kazakhstan: a site in Russian, advertising, outreach to distributors. Now you are copying it across the neighbouring countries, and in Tajikistan the first half of that plan stops working.

The country imports almost everything it consumes. There is almost nobody here to find you online.

How much this market buys

The statistics agency published its annual figures on 11 February 2026: imports of $8.3 billion, up 18.5% in a year; exports of $2.4 billion, up 27.7%. Customs Service figures reported by Asia-Plus on 26 February 2026 land in the same place: imports of $8.3 billion, up 18.6% or $1.3 billion, exports of $2.5 billion, up 26%, and a deficit of $5.8 billion. Two agencies agree, which is not a given here.

Kyrgyzstan carries the same lopsided shape, with imports above 81% of turnover. The same release puts exports mainly into China at 21.1%, the Netherlands at 16.3%, Switzerland at 13.3%, Uzbekistan at 11.1% and Russia at 9.7%. Those are export destinations. The agency does not break imports down the same way, and we will not guess at it.

Where your plan stops working

Of 10.8 million residents, 6.15 million use the internet and 2.05 million get as far as a social platform. Instagram's ad tools show the same 2.05 million; Facebook shows 582 thousand. Figures from DataReportal, 8 November 2025.

  • Azerbaijan73.1%

DataReportal, Digital 2026 for the three countries, data from October 2025. Platform advertising reach, not active users

Just over half the country uses the internet, and fewer than one in five can be reached through a social platform. The same advertising, the same posts and the same budget return a fraction of the Kazakh result here, and the campaign is not what is wrong.

You still need the digital presence. The importers, wholesalers and procurement people at companies that already ship sit inside that connected minority, and they do check a supplier online. It will not carry the weight here. The report carries no Telegram figure, because Telegram publishes none.

How goods get in

Tajikistan is neither a member of the Eurasian Economic Union nor one of its observers: the observers are Iran, Cuba, Moldova and Uzbekistan. An EAC certificate obtained for Kazakhstan does not clear this border on its own, and conformity requirements get settled before anything ships.

Geography decides the rest. The country is landlocked and borders Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and China, so goods from Europe cross at least one other country to arrive. In our experience the working route into Dushanbe runs through a distributor who already covers Uzbekistan. It works out that way because that distributor already has the trucks, the customs broker and the relationships on both sides of the crossing.

Language

The Uzbek distributor who usually brings the goods in corresponds in Russian, so your Uzbek materials travel to Dushanbe unedited. Tajik is needed where the product leaves the capital for the end buyer. It is written in Cyrillic.

When the market gathers

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry runs the country's main business event itself. The International Universal Exhibition-Fair "Tajikistan-2026" takes place 12-14 November 2026 at the Dushanbe Expo centre, covering around 25 sectors from energy and mining to food, construction and logistics, with a business forum alongside.

One general fair instead of a set of specialist shows tells you the scale of the market. The trip costs little time and gives broad coverage, and the organiser is a chamber of commerce, which makes it a useful contact in itself.

What we do in Tajikistan

A separate site, a separate campaign and a separate certification rarely pay for themselves in a market this size, so we cover Tajikistan inside a Central Asian scope.

The second half of your Kazakh plan is what still works here. We map the companies already importing the category, including the Uzbek and Kazakh distributors whose territory reaches Dushanbe, correspond in Russian, and fold what we find into the same written go/no-go the Pilot month produces for the neighbouring markets. If the numbers say Tajikistan deserves a budget of its own, we will say so. More often they say it belongs inside someone else's territory, and that is worth knowing before a brand spends on it.
